Men Encouraged To “Stay Strong, Live Long” Through Community Health Fair
Event Offers Free Screenings, COVID-19 Vaccines

【圣路易时报讯】The City of St. Louis Department of Health, in collaboration with several community partners, invites men and their families to its community health fair “Stay Strong, Live Long” tomorrow, Saturday, June 17, from 10am-2pm at the St. Louis Community College – Forest Park Student Center.

The community partners will provide services and screenings, information, and incentives. The event also features a free groceries food share, which starts at 11am, and food for purchase from the Link Market.

“The Department of Health wants men to know their health is important, especially as we recognize Men’s Health Month this June,” says Dr. Mati Hlatshwayo Davis, Director of Health for the City of St. Louis. “We need every man in our lives, from our fathers, our husbands, and our sons to visit the doctor for regular check-ups.”

A recent study of 1,000 men 18 years and older by the Cleveland Clinic found more than half did not get regular screenings. Of those who participated and identified as a man of color, 63% needed a regular health screening. In Missouri, men make up 67% of the potential years of life lost, according to data from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

“We have three main things we want men and their loved ones to take away from Saturday’s event,” says Bobie Williams, Bureau Chief for the Department of Health’s Family, Community and School Health. “These things are that men have access to health insurance, that they have an established and trusted primary care provider, and that they visit that provider annually for a complete physical exam.”

The event will feature speakers from participating partners. Below is the schedule of speakers:

  • 10:10am – Dr. Mati Hlatshwayo Davis, Director of Health, City of St. Louis
  • 10:15am – Dr. Jesse Davis, Chief Medical Officer and Vice President, Strategy, St. Louis Integrated Health Network
  • 11:15am – Chester Deanes, President, Fathers United to Raise Awareness (FUTRA)
  • 12:15pm – James Clark, Vice President of Public Safety & Community Response, Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis
